Football Field is a term used to refer to a large open area, generally rectangular in shape, used as a playing field for various sports, particularly American and Canadian football, association football (soccer) and Gaelic football. It is usually surrounded by a fence or other barriers to keep spectators and players off the field. The field is typically made of grass, turf or artificial turf, and is divided into two halves by a line running down the center.
The two halves are separated by a midfield line, which is marked with a midfield circle. Football fields are usually marked with yard lines, down markers, goal lines, and lines for the midfield. The yard lines are usually numbered from the midfield line, and the down markers are usually marked with a number and a letter.
At the end of each end of the field are the goal lines, which are marked with a goal post on either side. The goal posts are usually placed 8 yards from the end line, and are used to indicate the location of the ball when a touchdown is scored.
In addition to the goal lines, the football field is often marked with sidelines, which are usually marked with a white line running along the length of the field. The sidelines are used to indicate the boundaries of the field, and are used to keep players and spectators off the field during the game.
